Sony Blu-ray Players Receive 3D Upgrade
Posted by admin in blu-ray players on February 15, 2010

Aside from the 3D upgrade, the BDP-S470 looks to be very close to its predecessor, the BDP-N460, offering a full suite of streaming media services (Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, Slacker, YouTube), along with standard Blu-ray playback functionality. The press release also states that Pandora will be added to the Sony Bravia Internet video platform in the spring; we’re still trying to confirm if that update will be available to existing products like the BDP-N460. We were also able to confirm with Sony that the new players capable of getting the 3D upgrade will, at the very least, “support the HDMI 1.4 spec for full HD 3D”. Sony hasn’t been able to confirm whether the new players will support the full HDMI 1.4 spec, which includes more esoteric features like an inline Ethernet channel. The bottom line is that full 1080p 3D will be supported. (A Sony rep at CES 2010 told us that the PS3–which has an HDMI 1.3 output–will support full 1080p 3D, but we’re skeptical of that claim since others, most notably Panasonic, claim that full resolution 1080p 3D requires HDMI 1.4.
Blu-ray 3D recorder

A matter of time for Blu-ray 3D recorders to appear, but it seems like Panasonic is already raring to go with its Diga DMR-BWT3000. Before we delve into the details, it’s worth noting that the 3D mode is supported only in Blu-ray playback, though this kit sports a voluminous 2TB hard drive that records up to 254 hours of HD footage. Besides the usual digital TV tuners and networking functions found in most Japanese DVRs, there’re a few more unique features in this Panasonic model worth highlighting. First, there’s the “Jump Link Room” function based on an optional Wi-Fi dongle, which allows recorded videos and photos to be wirelessly shared within a household with compatible equipment. Then there’s the latest SDXC card slot compatible with high-capacity 64GB media for playing back HD clips, as well as dual HDMI outputs. Lastly, the DMR-BWT3000 offers an “Animation Mode” and “Sound Mode Tube” tuned for anime and to recreate warmish vacuum tube audio quality, respectively.

The S1Digital 100-disc Blu-ray changer delivers this level of convenience and the flexibility to download metadata and cover art automatically over the Web. All you need is to hook up the jukebox to a Windows Media Center (WMC)-compatible PC and install its bundled My Movies software to access up to 1,000 Blu-ray, DVD and CD titles through the intuitive WMC graphics user interface. By connecting this S1Digital box to a Windows Home server, users can also archive their media (without copy protection) onto a hard drive to free up disc slots with all the value-added features mentioned above.
