Every crisis deserves a sports car. And Thrustmaster’s Ferrari Wireless GT Cockpit 430 Scuderia Edition is yours, letting you really get behind the wheel of all those PC and PS3 racing game-sports cars that make this life one worth living. The Cockpit is wireless—God knows one more tangled controller cord could put you over the edge—and it folds up for easy stowage. But you aren’t going to be stowing this thing; it’s going to be a monument to your new and improved life. Look at that. Not a pork rind or a dirty sock in sight. As for the Cockpit itself, it’s a fully customizable, detailed reproduction of a real Ferrari 430 Scuderia, sporting an 11″ wheel and a brake pedal with magnetic resistance for more realistic pedal-mashing. Most enticingly, its 23-pound metal body will keep it from toppling when you’re leaning into those turns. And you will be.

Sony’s atracTable interactive surface console that debuted last year is finally ready for consumers, ready to go head-to-head (or table-to-table?) with the Microsoft Surface this June. If you haven’t heard, the atracTable is a 35 inch-wide surface space with an HD display that is controlled by gestures. Motion input is detected by dual built-in Sony ISS XCD-V60 cameras, both creating 3D images and allowing the user to control the panel. Along with gestures, the system can even determine the user’s age, sex and emotions.

The iPad may not have a built-in camera, multitasking capabilities, or support for Flash, but it does have a 9.7-inch high-resolution touch screen that many expect will be conducive for gaming. And though Apple only showed off a couple of games at the iPad launch event, the company made it clear that all iPhone apps–including games–would run on the iPad and that it expected many developers to create updated versions of their games that would take advantage of the device’s larger display.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether developers will charge you extra for the iPad version of an iPhone game you’ve already bought (we suspect that at least for some games the iPad version will be a separate purchase). However, we’re not going to worry about all that right now; instead we’re just going to take a moment to imagine what iPhone games will really benefit from making the move to the big screen, and which PC or online games would be ripe for iPad treatment.

Though the price is on the high side for a comparable hard disc drive (HDD), this addon is the only legitimate Xbox 360 HDD enhancement which will not void the console’s warranty. This is unlike the rival Sony PlayStation 3 Slim which can be user-upgraded with most, if not all, 2.5-inch laptop drives off the shelf.

TV recordings are stored either in the PS3’s built-in storage or up to four external USB hard drives (eight units can be registered). Other standard features include an electronic program guide and zoom function. Things get even better if you own a PlayStation Portable which can wirelessly watch live and recorded programs off a PS3 or to set the recorder through a network via its remote play function.

Ditching the conventional headset and microphone, the Speaker Com 360 offers two different ways to chat on Xbox Live. Using a design that incorporates magnetic earbuds, the accessory can be worn like a necklace with a hanging speakerbox that works like a speakerphone. It should really come in handy when playing on Xbox Live with someone else in the room who wouldn’t be able to hear chat otherwise. Of course you can also choose to wear the buds in-ear for a more traditional headset experience. The unit also connects to your Xbox 360 controller via a flat wire to reduce tangling. Better yet, no batteries are required to operate the speakerbox.

Sony had a few games playable in 3D including Super Stardust HD, Avatar, and Wipeout. The experience playing Wipeout in 3D is truly immersive, with layered graphics giving you a surreal sensation of being in the cockpit of a futuristic racing ship. The HUD (heads-up-display) felt almost touchable, and its subtle shake was very realistic. If you’ve played Wipeout, you’re aware of the game’s high-speed action and weaponry. In two dimensions it’s probably enough to give you a headache, but zipping around in 3D was surprisingly quite tolerable. The depth of the buildings and environments around the racetrack were all eye-popping and whole effect almost makes your ship appear to be floating in the space in front of your face.

The Sony rep who we chatted with explained that a to-be-dated firmware update will allow for PS3 gaming in 3D but could not disclose which content would be available at launch. We were also told that the update would allow for full 1080p 3D gaming, Regardless, the resulting experience will be more than sufficient for any gamer and it seems the PS3’s Blu-ray player may turn out to be the only such device that is upgradeable to 3D. There is a catch, however. The Sony rep explained that PS3 owners would need to purchase a Sony LH or HX series 3D-capable TV to get everything working correctly. We really have a hard time believing that, and even own our TV editor David Katzmaier thinks that PS3 in 3D should work with any 3D HDTV announced. That said, the previously mentioned Sony TVs will come with two sets of active shutter glasses.

Iron Will Innovations, a small, Canada-based company, has spent the last five years dedicated to the development of something it believes will not only transform the way consumers interact with their computers, but may contribute to military technology as well. This year at CES, Iron Will is exhibiting a technology it calls The Peregrine. Though WASD keyboard commands come second nature to most gamers, Peregrine is this year’s contender in the race to replace the keyboard. Peregrine is an elastic, military-grade glove that can recognize up to 30 customizable hand gestures. Wires are threaded throughout the glove and communicate by user-defined hot spots. For example, touching your index finger and thumb draws your weapon and you’re ready to fight. The pod breaks away quickly, thanks to its magnetic connection. Ideally, the glove would be wireless, but the Peregrine is wired via a USB-connected pod that attaches to the glove. Because the pod connects to the glove magnetically, users can quickly rip off the pod and switch to keyboard use without removing the glove. It may not be suitable for everyone, but intense gamers worried about sweat will be happy to know the glove’s fabric is breathable. Iron Will Innovations is marketing the glove as a gaming accessory, but the company is also developing the device for military use.

Nvidia’s 3D Vision requires a bundle of specialized hardware. At a minimum, the active glasses plus the USB emitter cost US$199. But since 120Hz LCD monitors are still not common (and Nvidia only lists two officially compatible models, along with some DLP TVs and projectors), it’s practically a requirement to purchase a bundle including the 22-inch Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ for US$598. On top of that, a desktop (not laptop) GPU–generally GeForce 8000 series or newer–is also required. That’s why we’re pleased to see that Asus is announcing an all-in-one solution in the form of a new 15.6-inch laptop with Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology built in. The US$1,699 G51J 3D has a 120Hz LCD panel, an Intel Core i7 CPU, a high-end Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M GPU, and comes bundled with a pair of Nvidia’s active glasses and the USB-powered IR emitter required to make the glasses work.

This is still an expensive proposition, and one that requires you to charge up and wear a pair of battery powered 3D glasses–but flipping open a laptop will certainly be easier for most than setting up a separate 120Hz LCD monitor and connecting to your desktop gaming rig via a dual-link DVI connection. We have yet to put the Asus G51J 3D through its paces, but the components seem well-suited for mid-high-end PC gaming, and the Nvidia 3D Vision technology itself goes from pretty interesting to mind-blowing depending on the game. Acer’s Aspire 5738DG, in contrast, uses a different passive 3D technology that was not nearly as impressive, and was hampered by components that were not up to speed for 3D gaming.
