Sony’s OLED TVs To Bow out ?

Sony is withdrawing the three-year-old XEL-1 from retail shelves in Japan. Back in 2007, this 11-inch OLED TV was a technological marvel with its ubercool 3mm-thin bezel and an amazing 1 million:1 dynamic contrast. But fast forward to today, these figures are far from impressive judging from the new HDTVs announced at CES 2010 in Las Vegas. Then there’s the 3D TV buzz which has the whole A/V industry talking Blu-ray 3D and shutter glasses instead of OLED, let alone a puny 11-incher (Sony XEL-1) which costs an astronomical US$2,500 a set.
Philips 3D TV

Philips has just announced its 3D TV lineup for Europe from its Cinema 21:9, 9000- and 8000-series. These 3D-enabled panels will be using the more expensive active shutter glass technology, though the goggles (two pairs) and companion wireless transmitter are offered as an upgrade package unlike other major brands. While this arrangement will not probably go down well with the early adopters, the Dutch electronics giant has promised to offer its 3D TVs without charging a premium to consumers.
As for the company’s plan for this part of the world, its Asia Pacific spokesperson was unable to comment beyond a tentative launch time-frame in the second half of the year. If this rollout date materializes, we should be expecting both 3D TVs as well as 3D Blu-ray players to debut in key cities throughout Asia then.
Toshiba’s LED-Backlit CELL TV

The raw processing power of Toshiba’s LED-backlit CELL TV (dubbed Kira2 in the US) can be tapped for a variety of resource-intensive applications, according to its spokesperson. Among these is real-time 2D-to-3D conversion for virtually any content from regular TV broadcasts to DVDs. Another possibility is 3D hand gesturing demonstrated at its booth, handy for adjusting TV volumes, etc. On the visual front, the integrated CELL processor allows LED local-dimming function of up to 512 zones. This is higher than most of its rivals, boasting dynamic contrast to an ultra-high 9 million:1, while doubling screen brightness at the same. This model is due in the second half of 2010 in the US for a premium price with the following notable features.
# Built-in Blu-ray player
# Built-in 1TB media server
# Onboard wireless HDMI
# Onboard 802.11n Wi-Fi
# Resolution+ advanced video upscaling
