BMW X3

BMW’s second generation X3 is getting ready for its official launch at the Detroit Motor Show next January. With a new bodystyle and increased overall dimensions, the redesign X3 is looking to regain its supremacy in the premium compact Sports Activity Vehicle segment. Before we take a look at the new rendering by Auto Motor und Sport, let’s recap some of the things we learned about the new 2010 bmw x3. According to unofficial numbers, the second generation X3 will have similar proportions as the first X5 SAV allowing the new BMW X1 to position itself as the entry level BMW SAV. The “kicked-up” window line that first saw the daylight in the X3 will be again evident and it will be seen as an X3 characteristic, a design element that will be associated with the model. It will also have will have a roof line slightly lower than the current mode, giving the car a sportier look. The 2010 BMW X3 will have a roof line slightly lower than the current model and will follow the X5’s steps by getting more round corners and a sportier look. The second generation X3 will be a more dynamic performance oriented Sports Activity Vehicle and it will have larger dimensions than the current model. It will measure 4.65 meters long, 1.85 meters wide and 1.68 meter tall, offering a more spacious cabin and cargo space than the current generation.

2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6

BMW’s X6 “Sports Activity Coupe” is a car of contradictions. Our review of the 2009 BMW X6 range called it “an oddity: a sport-utility vehicle designed to have a coupe-like shape.” For 2010, BMW has added a new model that may polarize people even further. It’s the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6, the first production hybrid from the maker of ultimate driving machines. The ActiveHybrid X6 uses the same Two-Mode Hybrid architecture found in the full-size 2010 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid and GMC Sierra Hybrid pickup trucks, as well as various full-size sport utilities including the ultra-luxe Cadillac Escalade Platinum Hybrid. But BMW has completely rethought the concept of “hybrid,” using the software that manages all the electric components to mimic the driving behavior of a seven-speed automatic transmission.

TheCarConnection drove the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 yesterday at the international press launch, and aside from a few badges and the instrumentation, you’d never know it was a hybrid. Except, of course, for the gas mileage: EPA ratings for the 2010 ActiveHybrid X6 are 17 mpg city / 19 mpg highway, against the standard X6 xDrive 50i that uses the same twin-turbo V8, which delivers only 13 mpg city / 18 mpg highway. The ActiveHybrid even has a better combined rating than the straight-six X6 xDrive 35i. And over a 100-mile-plus test drive, we saw average mileage of 20.4 mpg. Not bad for a large all-wheel-drive sport utility that weighs almost 3 tons.

BMW C1-E Electric Scooter

bmwc1-e-concept-7
BMW Motorrad developed the C1-E study as a contribution to the European safety project eSUM. The BMW C1-E provides exemplary protection for its rider. This is ensured by the safety cell with the conspicuous roll-over bar which dynamically spans the rider seat in combination with the energy-absorbing impact element at the nose end. A further special point is that the C1-E rider wears a seat-belt. In the study this safety feature is highlighted by red belts and belt buckles. Visually the concept vehicle expresses brand typical sheer driving pleasure and clearly distinguishes itself from typical scooter looks. Its lines are dynamically stretched and flow horizontally with a low visual centre of gravity. The fairing with its windscreen, the luggage space behind the rider and the side stand for effortless parking ensure high suitability for everyday riding combined with a high degree of wind and weather protection.

The electric motor employed in the study has been designed for city use and is based on components by the company Vectrix. The motor obtains its power from a lithium-ion battery and thus possesses sufficient power for mastering most inner-city traffic riding with ease. Alternatively the vehicle could also be equipped with an efficient, low-emissions internal combustion engine. The safety features of the C1-E have been taken from the former BMW C1 and further enhanced. BMW’s avant-garde two-wheeler is regarded as a milestone in safety on two wheels. It is the only motorised single-track vehicle to be exempt from mandatory helmet wearing in almost all European countries. This BMW Motorrad study is likely to remain the only model of its kind. Series production is currently not planned. Nevertheless, findings from the project will find their way into other future developments in the field of single-track vehicles.
